Dear Beacon 10th grade parents—
Welcome back to the school year. To start it off, we, the five class reps for the grade, have organized the potluck so parents can get to know each other and so we can all learn more about the 10th grade community service program. We have invited social studies teacher Bayard Faithfull, who runs the program, to speak and take questions. This year’s theme: community service (required this year).
Please join us:
Wednesday, Oct. 25
6 to 7:30 p.m.
522 West 44th Street
Please bring the following, if you can:
Last name A-L: a NON-alcoholic beverage (seltzer, lemonade, ice tea, etc.)
Last name M-Z: finger foods (chips, cookies, dumplings, samosas, etc.)
We will provide serving dishes and utensils.
Let us know if you have any questions.

Your vital contributions to the Beacon Parent Association are used to underwrite 50+ after school clubs, sports teams, tournament trips, equipment, supplies and the backbone of it all, teachers! Yes, teachers are paid to teach and lead our kids in these programs. They aren’t cheap, but they are worth every penny. We’re out of the starting gate this 2017-2018 school year with an incredible 14% target reached on our very first PA meeting night! Thanks all for a tremendous turnout. WE NEED TO KEEP POURING IT ON.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!
LAST GENERAL PA MEETING OF THE YEAR:
June 20, 6:00-7:00 p.m., Beacon Library
This meeting will feature a panel of Seniors and their parents/caregivers who will discuss their experiences with the college process. Moderated by Deb Heller. Highly recommended for parents of rising Juniors and Seniors!
And… There are so many great ways to become an involved Beacon parent. The following Executive Board positions are still open and we are accepting nominations: Treasurer, Budget Committee, Audit Committee, Event Chairs, and Auction Chairs. The PA will hold an expedited election in October to fill these positions. We encourage you to throw your hat in the ring! Contact firstname.lastname@example.org to nominate yourself or a friend, or if you have any questions.
COMING UP IN THE 2017–2018 SCHOOL YEAR:
Developing Parent Community
FAQs for Parents
The Community Outreach Committee is putting together a list of FAQs for parents in each grade. If anyone has suggestions for the FAQ list (questions, answers, info they wish they had known), or would like to volunteer to help with compiling and/or editing this list, please contact Kristine Gregorek and Ted Leather at email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org.
The PA would like to initiate a new system of Grade Representatives. These parent volunteers would serve as representatives for the 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. We are looking for 3–5 parents per grade who can take the lead in organizing the grade-wide potluck dinners at the beginning of the year, as well as organizing speakers for PA meetings that are of particular interest to their grades. If interested, please contact Bonnie Scarborough at email@example.com.
Because families are spread out among all five boroughs, the PA would like to initiate a new system of neighborhood representatives. These parent volunteers would organize social gatherings for parents in their own neighborhoods in an effort to build community, share common experiences as parents of teenagers, and possibly organize neighborhood fundraising events. If interested, please contact Bonnie Scarborough at firstname.lastname@example.org.
