Summary of November 1 2017 School Leadership Team (SLT) Meeting
The SLT includes representatives from the school administration, faculty, teachers union representative, parents and students. Parent members for 2017-18 are Lewis Wendell, Michelle Lin Guitierrez, Inci Ulger and Marie Nachsin, in addition to the PA Co-Presidents. Discussion of what the SLT wanted to have as its goals for the year. Ideas included discussion of senior class program, initiatives to make students of color to feel more welcome, adequate science classes for all juniors and seniors, more formalized role of the SLT, and aligning budget and school priorities.
Junior/Senior Science Classes
The PA reported back on discussions with the school administration on why some juniors/seniors had a hard time scheduling science classes for 2017-18. First, the incoming 9th grade was the largest ever, with over 400 students. Because of this, science resources had to be pulled from higher grades to cover required freshman science. Second, juniors have preference in getting science because they need a 3rd year of science to fulfill minimum graduation requirements, so seniors were last in priority, although creative solutions were found. In addition, the school had switched to a new system of asking students for their preferences (from Microsoft to Google) and not all students understood the new system, so not all preferences were recorded.
